Reynolds Attack Wheelset Review

The Reynolds Attack clincher wheelset represents a step forward in all carbon fiber wheel technology. Reynolds has refined its previous track-tested technology to bring us the Attack.

Addressing many of the concerned faced by both experienced and neophyte carbon wheel owners, Reynolds has expanded their wheels repertoire by adding a few new amenities to enhance both safety and reliability of their otherwise excellent carbon-clincher wheel line.

To address the heat-warping issues caused by long downhill episodes by heavier riders, Reynolds now includes a scrim brake surface for the requisite carbon pads to grip.  They also advise those unaccustomed to the peculiarities of carbon wheels that standard cork brake pads will void the warranty, and recommend usage of their own in-house carbon pads.  However, some owners have reported these pads to be a bit noisy until they get some heat built up, and by then their excellent grip capacity may be a little after-the-fact.  Instead, most experienced riders suggest usage of a more time-tested brake set like the Swiss Stop King Carbon line.

As many owners have complained of the carbon wheel’s proclivity for cracking under stress instead of bending like aluminum, Reynolds' new lay-up is both simpler and sturdier than even their own previous offerings.  Even so, this wheelset’s absolute breaking point is significantly higher than any aluminum counterparts, while maintaining their much lower 430g lightweight status.

As one might expect of a company that has begun of late to specialize in carbon wheels, the Attack is a well-sorted example of this technology, and is rapidly becoming the most popular all-carbon wheel on the market. Though many still bemoan the learning curve of this new technology, the fact is that these wheels are perfectly suitable to both racing and everyday riding. Even the Reynolds Attack’s most strident detractors generally consider this wheelset at the vanguard of future racing technology, testament to the fact that even among those grumbling malcontents, this remains one of the best wheels in the world.
