Sram S40 Wheelset Review

Sram S40

The new SRAM S40 may well be leading the charge as America’s answer to foreign dominance of the racing wheelset niche even though the SRAM company as a whole is new to the wheelset market.

SRAM began producing twist grip shifters way back in 1987, and has been steadily expanding its product variation ever since.  Since its recent equity partnership with Lehman Brothers Merchant banking in 2008, SRAM’s product line has exploded, landing the S-Line of wheelsets into the Europeans pie like a load of carbon fiber shrapnel. Case in point: SRAM recently bought out its only major competitor - Zipp, allowing the company access to levels of technology previously available only to the racing elite.

The S-line of wheelsets  is designed to be fully competition ready, with all the most up to date advancements in carbon wheel technology. The largest of these deep-dish wheels is the SRAM S80, which as you might expect is 80mm wide and contoured to slice through the wind with optimal efficiency. Stepping down in size from there, we have the SRAM S60 and SRAM S40, the last of which is perhaps the most versatile of the three.

Even though it doesn’t have the radical contouring of its bigger brothers, the SRAM S40 wheelset makes up for a lack of aero proficiency by being significantly lighter and smoother, a boon to anyone who does anything other than ride in straight line on billiard tables.

It has all the amenities of the Zipp wheel and more, since the two are largely identical. The only major difference between the two are the bearings, as the S-line utilizes either their own or Shimano’s excellent alloy hubs, as opposed to the carbon units favored by Zipp. Otherwise, the S40’s construction makes it a bit more suitable for everyday riding, contrasting sharply the fragile and finicky race-only Zipps. Other than that, price is the main differentiating factor, as the SRAM S40 comes in a bit cheaper than an equivalent Zipp, mainly due to increased production efficiency.

Watch out, mes amis français prétentieux: Chicago’s got something for you, right here.
