Here’s a little story about the Mavic Ksyrium SL Premium wheelset to help you understand the nature of the beast :  Once upon a time, a guy named Schumacher drove around a track three seconds quicker than the next closest car.  Afterwards, another guy on the same team jumped into the same car, hit a wet patch in the road and catapulted two million dollars worth of race-car through a field and into a fence. He did not get his deposit back.

When one hears from professionals that something is perfect, and hears from amateurs that it is broken, then it might be safe to assume some amount of operator error.   Such is the case with the Mavic Ksyrium SL Premium wheelset.

When reading many reviews of this Mavic wheelset, it seems as if there’s about as many incidences of broken parts and worn-out hubs as there are blisteringly fast lap times.  But upon closer inspection the glaring becomes obvious, in that those two extremes are ALL you see. Even closer under the microscope, when one examines the experience and riding habits of those reviewers, one notices the trend, that the professional racers unanimously find this wheelset to be leaps and bounds above any other. Obversly, many of those who use this wheelset to ride around the Newark beltway on the weekends wind up walking home with broken spokes. Coincidence?

Hardly.  With its long list of high-quality and technically advanced components, as well as Mavic’s reputation for quality at any dollar level,  it should be apparent by now that the Mavic Ksyrium SL Premium wheelset is not for casual weekend warriors. The SL means “Super Light,” and that is exactly the raison d’etre of this wheelset. These are fantastic racing wheels, plain and simple. As that unnamed driver may have noted from the stretcher, it benefits no one to confuse talent with money, purpose with desire.  If you want to go fast and have the talent and physical acumen to do it, rest assured: you simply will not find better wheels than these for anything approaching this price. Otherwise, get some training wheels.

The Ksyrium Elite is kind of like a really high-end wooden driver: well-engineered to do the job it does reliably and for a long time, but neither as light or precise as units designed primarily to be light and precise.  Running on the heavy side for a racing wheel at 1830 g stock, this wheelset is probably best used for training or practice days, as the spin up of those excellent bearings is very fast and the wheel’s heavy outer rim keeps them at speed.  This flywheel effect is a fantastic attribute if sustained high-speed cruising over flat land is on the agenda, but may not be ideal for the quick cut-and-thrust of close-in road racing.

In terms of durability, the Elite wheelset is near the top of the game for any manufacturer at any price, as they come stock on several bikes and have been known to last for tens of thousands of miles without ever going out of round.

Although intentional encounters with potholes are never recommended for any race bike, rest assured the Elite’s wheels will likely see you from one end to the other and back onto the flats without a hitch. Replacement of the stock alloy bearings with ceramic units is never a bad idea, since that is one of the few things one can do to make these wheels any more bullet-proof than they already are.

The only other improvements suggested are to reduce the wheelset’s overall weight, which is this wheel's Achilles heel. Titanium 87 g per pair skewers are a good start.

Overall, the Ksyrium Elite is a great wheelset for any occasion, especially when a smooth demeanor over long distances is the primary goal.

The Aksium may be considered most appropriate for training on a race bike, or as an excellent all-around wheel for a sport/touring model.  If you’re thinking of this wheelset as a full-race unit, then at 2000 grams it falls a bit on the heavy side of the spectrum.  However, as anyone who has owned a set will attest, there is a reason for these spinner’s added heft.

Though most companies try to hide their lead hoop’s bad engineering and cheap components behind a requirement for “more strength,” don’t believe the propaganda.  Most other 2000 gram wheels don’t come near the Aksium’s level of strength and durability, and are little more than an upgrade from department-store stock units. With their reputation on the line, rest assured that when Aksium makes a wheel heavy, it’s because it will withstand the warm side of a nuclear blast.

At their 21mm height, the Mavic Aksiums aren’t the tallest in the industry, owing most of their extra weight to stiffer and more reliable stainless steel spokes and quality QRM bearing.  The T-6061 alloy of the rim itself is a bit thicker than the average race wheels, which shows when the runouts get aggressive.  Flying down the road at 50mph over the cracked asphalt designed for a 4000 car is rough on wheels, especially if the rider isn’t quite as dainty as the average.

However, even after tens of thousands of miles of repeated abuse by the stockiest racers, the Aksium’s wheels remain straight and true.

So are the Aksiums nothing more than armor-grade training wheels? Hardly. Even in spite of their slight heft, the fact is that any Mavic Aksium wheel is going to accelerate smoother and more quickly than practically any other for the same price.

The Mavic Ellipse is similar in feel to the Mavic Ksyrium SL, however the Mavic Ellipse represents about 95% of the performance of wheelsets at 50% of the cost. Far from cutting corners to maintain their competitive edge, Mavic uses the research and technology developed from their highest end racing wheels to glean performance that others need pay a premium for.

Starting from the center and moving outward, the Ellipse wheelset starts with Mavic’s own sealed cartridge QRM bearing, known to provide years of maintenance-free riding with all the resistance of a greased Chihuahua on a water slide.

Although there are more expensive and arguably better ceramic bearings out there, it’s beyond debate at this point that the QRM remains one of the best metal units in the industry.  Again, the QRM is one of those race technologies that have been combined with the economy of scale to produce yet another step up in Mavic’s price/value equation.

The Mavic Ellipse’s high-strength stainless spokes are profiled to decrease drag.  Whereas most companies cut down the existing round-stock spokes to gain this edge, Mavic actually goes up a gauge and contours down from there, to maintain the original spoke’s cross-section. Although this production method does maintain the strength of the original spoke, it must be said that this is part of the reason this wheel-set comes in at a slightly heavy 1996g.

Additionally, those sinister-looking black anodized 6061 aluminum rims are 30mm in depth to provide more inside angle for reduced drag, without altering the polar-moment of inertia too much.

Given the slightly high curb weight and extra aero edge of the spokes and absolute rigidity they offer, the Mavic Ellipse may be best applied to sections of flat, winding sections of road like the Champs-Elysees.

The Mavic Ksyrium SSC wheelset is stiff. Very stiff. Some just have to cry about speed coming at the expense of comfort, but those people should be racing cruise ships instead of bicycles. For those of us that understand that this sport is about speed, then listen close, you’re about to hear a secret.

Compared to its next closest competitor in this marketplace  - the Alex 295 -  the living legend Mavic Ksyrium SSC series and this particular incarnation is a Formula 1 kart to a NASCAR beer-mobile. Essentially, they both do the same thing, but one does it with grace and finesse while the other does it…well…drunk. Costing a bit more on average than the Alex rims the SSC justifies its existence with one very long list of features.

An integrated free wheel hub with FTS, M9 compatible freewheel, adjustable and removable QRM sealed cartridge bearings and a black anodized Maxtal SUP welded 6061 rim (for 19-23 mm tires) keeps things rolling smoothly.  After absorbing that brain-full, hold your breath for this: aero-friendly Zircal straight pull spokes with integrated aluminum nipple and anti-rotation system (Radial on the front and Isopulse for the rear) and Fore drilling technologies UB Control brake sidewalls help to round things out.

Mavic even sends the Mavic Ksyrium SCC on its way with a bearing adjustment tool.

Wait a minute; doesn’t Alex make BMX wheels?  Well, good for them, then.

Not only does the SSC come with a staggering list of features, but it may be one of the most unabashedly sexy wheel combinations on the market today. If these babies don’t have the French maids whistling at your ride, then just give up and buy a Ferrari.  If you’re willing to do the maintenance to make your bike a championship-winning bullet, then think hard about the Mavic Ksyrium  SSC’s.  More expensive than BMX wheels and worth every penny.

Sitting near or at the top of any metallic wheel class, the Mavic Ksyrium SL SSC 700c is a no compromise race piece.  However, it would be a mistake classify these wheels as some finicky, track-only garage queens. This wheelset all but defines the modern-legend Ksyrium line and carries on in the line’s tradition of making durable wheels with an impressive features list, which nonetheless manages to outperform its sheet specs.

Weighing in at 1490g, the 700c line is, like many wheelsets in this series, a tad bit heavier than it needs to be. However, when one compares it to others in this price range like the FSA RD 400 the reason for this becomes clear. Unlike the RD 400’s, this paragon of Ksyrium engineering will take the uphill/downhill stress of 250+ lb. riders without ever loosening or breaking one of their ZIRCAL straight-pull aluminum spokes. Similarly strong is the rim material made of MAXTAL aluminum, which is some 30% stronger than the 6061 alloy used in most rims.

Not content with simply using adamantium-grade metal, Mavic also uses inter-spoke milling and a UB Control brake systems in this line.  As if that weren’t enough to skate across the Himalayas, a special Force Transfer system puts the load where it needs to be instead wasting it on breaking stuff. QRM bearings are de rigueur on any wheelset in this class, as are the aluminum nipple, but a carbon front hub body is just going above and beyond.

As if it weren’t clear enough by now, the Ksyrium SL SSC 700c wheelset may well be all things to all people, provided one has the financial means to acquire a set. Beware of buying used, though; part of the Mavic quality guarantee is its excellent warranty, just in case your new wheels happen to get run over by a bus.

Manufacturer Mavic is renowned for making some of the best wheelsets money can buy, so one would naturally assume that such quality and evolution of design would trickle down into their cheaper offerings, and it does.

The main thing that separates the Mavic Ksyrium Equipe from more expensive rims is its use of less exotic materials than one might find on Armstrong’s ride. A medium gauge 6061 aluminum ring keeps the wheels on the bike going round and round for thousands of miles, but like all aluminum rims requires a bit of caution when it comes to traversing road irregularities. Stainless steels spikes motivate the rims, and are contoured for less aero loading. Excellent QRM bearings run smooth and cool all day long, and rarely ever require adjustment on this wheel.
