Sitting near or at the top of any metallic wheel class, the Mavic Ksyrium SL SSC 700c is a no compromise race piece. However, it would be a mistake classify these wheels as some finicky, track-only garage queens. This wheelset all but defines the modern-legend Ksyrium line and carries on in the line’s tradition of making durable wheels with an impressive features list, which nonetheless manages to outperform its sheet specs.
Weighing in at 1490g, the 700c line is, like many wheelsets in this series, a tad bit heavier than it needs to be. However, when one compares it to others in this price range like the FSA RD 400 the reason for this becomes clear. Unlike the RD 400’s, this paragon of Ksyrium engineering will take the uphill/downhill stress of 250+ lb. riders without ever loosening or breaking one of their ZIRCAL straight-pull aluminum spokes. Similarly strong is the rim material made of MAXTAL aluminum, which is some 30% stronger than the 6061 alloy used in most rims.
Not content with simply using adamantium-grade metal, Mavic also uses inter-spoke milling and a UB Control brake systems in this line. As if that weren’t enough to skate across the Himalayas, a special Force Transfer system puts the load where it needs to be instead wasting it on breaking stuff. QRM bearings are de rigueur on any wheelset in this class, as are the aluminum nipple, but a carbon front hub body is just going above and beyond.
As if it weren’t clear enough by now, the Ksyrium SL SSC 700c wheelset may well be all things to all people, provided one has the financial means to acquire a set. Beware of buying used, though; part of the Mavic quality guarantee is its excellent warranty, just in case your new wheels happen to get run over by a bus.
