Here’s a little story about the Mavic Ksyrium SL Premium wheelset to help you understand the nature of the beast : Once upon a time, a guy named Schumacher drove around a track three seconds quicker than the next closest car. Afterwards, another guy on the same team jumped into the same car, hit a wet patch in the road and catapulted two million dollars worth of race-car through a field and into a fence. He did not get his deposit back.
When one hears from professionals that something is perfect, and hears from amateurs that it is broken, then it might be safe to assume some amount of operator error. Such is the case with the Mavic Ksyrium SL Premium wheelset.
When reading many reviews of this Mavic wheelset, it seems as if there’s about as many incidences of broken parts and worn-out hubs as there are blisteringly fast lap times. But upon closer inspection the glaring becomes obvious, in that those two extremes are ALL you see. Even closer under the microscope, when one examines the experience and riding habits of those reviewers, one notices the trend, that the professional racers unanimously find this wheelset to be leaps and bounds above any other. Obversly, many of those who use this wheelset to ride around the Newark beltway on the weekends wind up walking home with broken spokes. Coincidence?

With its long list of high-quality and technically advanced components, as well as Mavic’s reputation for quality at any dollar level, it should be apparent by now that the Mavic Ksyrium SL Premium wheelset is not for casual weekend warriors. The SL means “Super Light,” and that is exactly the raison d’etre of this wheelset. These are fantastic racing wheels, plain and simple. As that unnamed driver may have noted from the stretcher, it benefits no one to confuse talent with money, purpose with desire. If you want to go fast and have the talent and physical acumen to do it, rest assured: you simply will not find better wheels than these for anything approaching this price. Otherwise, get some training wheels.
