Mavic Ksyrium Equipe Wheelset Review

The Mavic Ksyrium Equipe was originally named for the French daily sports paper created by journalist Jacques Godett and is still the wheel of choice for many contenders of the Tour de France.  In spite of the fact that some of the haughtier racers out there might consider it just another “budget” wheelset, the fact remains that the Equipe is only about 100 grams heavier than the Ksyrium Es’s they’re using on their own rides. Proof again that one need not spend one’s inheritance to keep up with those that foolishly have.

Frankly, if 200 grams is going to be the difference between winning and losing the race for you, then you might want to consider spending the $400 you’ll be saving over any other manufacturer’s “competing” wheels and invest in a gym membership. Manufacturer Mavic is renowned for making some of the best wheelsets money can buy, so one would naturally assume that such quality and evolution of design would trickle down into their cheaper offerings, and it does.

The main thing that separates the Mavic Ksyrium Equipe from more expensive rims is its use of less exotic materials than one might find on Armstrong’s ride. A medium gauge 6061 aluminum ring keeps the wheels on the bike going round and round for thousands of miles, but like all aluminum rims requires a bit of caution when it comes to traversing road irregularities. Stainless steels spikes motivate the rims, and are contoured for less aero loading. Excellent QRM bearings run smooth and cool all day long, and rarely ever require adjustment on this wheel.

Though carrying a tad bit more mass than those who “need” full race wheels are used to, the Equipe is still a fantastic wheel for the money, and much loved in the world of training and sport riding for its lightweight durability.
