Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset Review
In terms of price, the Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheelset comes in between the Equipe and SC CL wheelsets, though the type of performance it offers would not best be described as an average of the two.
The Ksyrium Elite is kind of like a really high-end wooden driver: well-engineered to do the job it does reliably and for a long time, but neither as light or precise as units designed primarily to be light and precise. Running on the heavy side for a racing wheel at 1830 g stock, this wheelset is probably best used for training or practice days, as the spin up of those excellent bearings is very fast and the wheel’s heavy outer rim keeps them at speed. This flywheel effect is a fantastic attribute if sustained high-speed cruising over flat land is on the agenda, but may not be ideal for the quick cut-and-thrust of close-in road racing.
In terms of durability, the Elite wheelset is near the top of the game for any manufacturer at any price, as they come stock on several bikes and have been known to last for tens of thousands of miles without ever going out of round.
Although intentional encounters with potholes are never recommended for any race bike, rest assured the Elite’s wheels will likely see you from one end to the other and back onto the flats without a hitch. Replacement of the stock alloy bearings with ceramic units is never a bad idea, since that is one of the few things one can do to make these wheels any more bullet-proof than they already are.
The only other improvements suggested are to reduce the wheelset’s overall weight, which is this wheel's Achilles heel. Titanium 87 g per pair skewers are a good start.
Overall, the Ksyrium Elite is a great wheelset for any occasion, especially when a smooth demeanor over long distances is the primary goal.
